Speeding Car Accidents
Speeding, defined as driving too fast for road conditions or exceeding the posted speed limit, is common in the U.S., as well as in Alabama. In a recent year, speeding was responsible for nearly 9,400 deaths in the United States. Despite the obvious dangers of speeding, and the fact that it endangers everyone on the road, 70% of drivers observed in a recent study exceeded the posted speed limit. Of that number, nearly 1 in 5 vehicles were speeding by more than 10 miles per hour over the speed limit.

Speeding and its Consequences
For the last two decades, speeding has been involved in approximately one-third of all motor vehicle fatalities. Speed affects a driver's safety even when driving the speed limit in the case that a driver is traveling too fast for the road conditions. In this case, police may cite, "driving too fast for conditions." While the same speed may be acceptable on dry or unaffected roadways, it is not safe in certain conditions. For instance: not taking extra caution on wet roads, in road repair areas, or at night, can all cause the rate of speed to come into play during an accident.
According to a recent study, speeding becomes an important factor in fatal crashes as road conditions worsen. In a recent year, speeding was a factor in fatal crashes for:
- 16% of drivers on dry roads,
- 19% of drivers on wet roads,
- 39% of drivers on roads with snow or slush,
- 40% of drivers on roads with moving or standing water,
- 41% of drivers on roads with mud, dirt, or gravel, and
- 43% of drivers on roads with ice or frost.
Unfortunately, speeding doesn't only affect the driver, but also everyone on the road with the speeding vehicle. Below are just a few of the consequences of speeding:
- Increased possibility of losing control of the vehicle;
- Reduced effectiveness of restraints;
- Increased degree of crash severity; and
- Increased fuel costs for the speeding driver.
