Rollover Driving Accidents

A rollover accident is one that involves a vehicle tipping over onto its side or rolling completely over until it is upside down. Rollover accidents may involve a single vehicle, but more often that not involve multiple vehicles. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA), rollover accidents are relatively rare, accounting for only 2% of all traffic accidents in the United States. However, they are incredibly deadly when they do happen and account for 35% of all traffic-related fatalities, which equates to about 7,000 deaths.
There are two types of rollover accidents:
  • Tripped rollovers: This type of rollover accident accounts for 95% of single-car rollover accidents. A tripped rollover occurs when the vehicle leaves the roadway and something trips it to cause the rollover. The trip may be soft soil, a curb, or a median. In this instance, it is important to determine if an unsafe or faulty condition caused the rollover and if so, how that caused or contributed to the injuries.
  • Untripped rollovers: This is a rare type of rollover, accounting for only 5% of all rollover accidents. This generally involves some type of top-heavy vehicle and a high-speed collision avoidance maneuver, such as swerving.
Whichever type of rollover accident you and your family member may have been involved in, if you were not at fault and were injured through the negligence of someone else, you likely are due compensation for your injuries and damages. You may have incurred medical bills, lost time at work, and substantial emotional distress. What Can Cause a Rollover Accident?
Unfortunately, any vehicle is capable of rolling over in certain circumstances. Instances that could cause a vehicle to roll over include:
  • Vehicle type: Vehicles with a high center of gravity or those that are top heavy are more likely to roll over.
  • Speeding: The faster you are going, the harder it is to control the vehicle. Speeding is a factor in 40% of all rollover accidents.
  • Too much tire grip: This phenomenon can lead to excessive sideways force, which can lead to rollovers.
  • Not enough tire grip: Worn tires can reduce the vehicle's ability to grip the road, resulting in skidding and possibly rolling over.
  • Location: Rollover accidents are more common on rural roadways in which there is only one lane per direction of travel and a higher posted speed limit.
  • Overloading: A vehicle loaded with supplies etc. will have strained tires. The vehicle will be harder to maneuver and can cause top-heavy vehicles to tip over if the load in unbalanced or shifts during the transport.
  • Alcohol: Nearly 50% of all rollover accidents involve an impaired driver. Alcohol reduces many of the skills needed for the safe operation of a motor vehicle.
  • Curved roads or exit ramps: These two factors in combination with excessive speed and a top-heavy vehicle can be a recipe for a rollover crash.
  • Icy and/or wet roads: Icy and wet roads cause all sorts of havoc, including rollover accidents.
