Talladega, located in East Central Alabama, is about 50 miles east of Birmingham. The city is the county seat of Talladega County and is home to some 15,500 citizens. Talladega is home the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind, Talladega Municipal Airport, a public general aviation airport, the International Motorsports Hall of Fame, and most notably, the Talladega Superspeedway.
The Talladega Superspeedway, also know as "Dega," and formerly known as the Alabama International Motor Speedway (AIMS), is a motorsports complex located just north of the city itself. Housed by the former Anniston Air Force Base, the tri-oval track was constructed in 1969. The track hosts the NASCAR Cup Series, NASCAR Xfinity Series, and the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. Talladega is the longest NASCAR oval, with a length of 2.66 miles. The Daytona International Speedway is 2.5 miles long. The total capacity of Talladega is around 175,000, with the main grandstand holding about 80,000.
Like any city, Talladega is not immune to accidents and wrongful death situations. However, Talladega has extra risks based on the sheer number of people who visit Talladega to attend races at the Talladega Superspeedway each year. Due to the influx of people during race times, Talladega County sees a significant spike in the number of personal injury or wrongful death incidents during these race events. These incidents can involve a multitude of activities including driving vehicles, slip and falls, defective products, failure to maintain equipment and property, assaults, drunk driving, texting and driving, distracted driving, burn injuries, dog bites, and more.
